365 Days of 24/7 for Amelie's
Popular NoDa bakery celebrates one year anniversary of being open 24 hours

Charlotte, NC/January 9, 2010 -- This month, Amelie's French Bakery marks its first anniversary as a 24-hour business. The bakery and cafe unlocked its doors at 7 a.m. on Jan. 9, 2009 and hasn't closed since. Customers come and go day and night, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Bucking the down-turn, Amelie's built a loyal following after its May 2008 debut in the eclectic NoDa Arts District. But business exploded when operating hours expanded to 24/7.

"We did well, right out of the gate. We were excited, humbled and doubly grateful given the economy," says co-owner Lynn St. Laurent. "But the 24-hour thing changed everything. We never imagined a response this positive or this overwhelming. It's been grow, grow, grow."

Business has more than quadrupled. The size of the bakery has doubled. The staff has ballooned from 15 to more than 30. Online orders have increased three-fold.

There are more ovens and more chefs to keep them cooking - up from two to nine gourmets in less than one year. The original cash registers are gone, replaced with new point-of-sale models that speed transactions and help keep the lines manageable.

Last January, Amelie's had 50 Facebook fans and was hoping for 100. Last week they cracked 2,500.

Honors from the last twelve months include four Creative Loafing Best of Charlotte awards, a Best of the Best prize from Charlotte magazine, and a second year as Taste of Charlotte's Best Dessert.

Co-owner Bill Lamb attributes the astonishing growth to authentic and amazing French foods, the unique decor and faithful customers who spread the word. "But it really came alive with the 24-hour schedule."

Centrally located two miles north of Center City on N. Davidson St., Amelie's is just minutes from Uptown or the University area.
